Ever heard people say that they’re ‘living their best life’ or seen the hashtag #livingmybestlife and wondered what it really means and how you can live your best life too? Chances are you probably have!

Now before you read any further I want to point something out. Just because you aren’t sitting on a beach in Spain sipping cocktails, doesn’t mean you can’t #liveyourbestlife in other ways.

Everyone’s definition of their ‘best life’ will be different. Maybe you define it by having financial freedom, without debts or worry. Perhaps you’re looking for success and respect in your chosen career. Or maybe you find true happiness in yourself and being the best version of yourself.

However your best life looks to you, there is a proven formula to get yourself to that point of true happiness that is guaranteed to be realistic and achievable (if you’re willing to do the work)!

What you can do to start living your best life, today

1. Define what living your best life means for you

There is no set definition for what it means to be living your best life, and this is because it is truly subjective. Everyone is going to have a different definition of what is best for them, because everyone is unique and has different interests.

Currently there are over 3.8M posts on Instagram with the hashtag #livingmybestlife and many of these photos feature people travelling or buying expensive things. But, are those the most important things to you?

Sit down and define what your best life looks like to you. Getting clear on your vision is the first step to knowing how to achieve it.

2. Set goals that excite you

There is a hierarchy to goal setting and it works a bit like this…

A type’ goals – you are confident about these goals because they’re likely something that you have achieved in the past. Maybe it’s something like ‘I want to lose 5kg before my friends wedding.’ It’s not totally impossible and you know you can do it.

‘B type’ goals – these goals may seem like a bit of a stretch but you are pretty confident that, with a bit of hard work, you can achieve them. ‘I am going to quit my full time corporate job and support my family with my own business’ – this might be your B type goal!

‘C type’ goals – these are the scary goals that almost seem impossible! You may not even be sure how to achieve these goals but the idea of them alone makes you excited. These are the goals we dream about!

When you’re aiming for the bigger picture aspiration in your life, A and B type goals are just not going to get you there. Setting yourself ‘C type’ goals are really envisioning how you life will be when you reach these goals is what will steer you on the path to your dream future.

“Sit down and write it down with a pen and then make up your mind you are going to do it. Don’t spend any time thinking of why you can’t. The fun is not in getting it, the fun is in growing. Goals are to help us grow, goals are to help us get. The getting is a side benefit; the growth is the real benefit.” – Bob Proctor

3. Make progress every day (no matter how small) towards your goal

Staying focused on your C type goal is important and the best way to stay focused is to actively implement something that gets you one step closer.

It doesn’t matter how small that thing is, whether it’s simply writing a to-do list for the week ahead, getting up earlier to do some research or go for an extra long run to clear your mind, every little thing you do towards your goal will keep you on track.

If you aren’t sure how to get yourself closer to your C type goal, try reaching out to a role model, coach or someone whose life inspires you. Ask them if they wouldn’t mind sharing their story about how they reached their goals. Trust me, everyone successful has set goals for themselves at some point!

“Anyone who has ever accomplished anything of any consequence, didn’t know how to get what they want, they only knew that they were going to get it. You don’t know how to do something until after you’ve done it. Our problem is, we set goals to do what we think we can do or what we’ve already done. There’s no inspiration in that.” – Bob Proctor

4. Make an effort to switch off

With our mobile phones always so close by, it’s tempting to constantly be checking our emails and social media feeds.

Although it can be a great source of inspiration, social media is also a major distraction when it comes to focusing on those big goals. You may even be using social media to distract you from everything that needs to be done.

Make a conscious effort to switch off every day for at least a few minutes and focus your energy on reading a new book, listening to a motivating podcast or writing in your journal.

Being present in the moment and not worrying about what everyone else in the world is doing will give you more time to focus on yourself!

5. Changing your subconscious paradigms

“Your behaviour causes your results. If you want to change the results, don’t look outside of yourself. Don’t say it’s the economy, it’s the boss, it’s my spouse, it’s none of those things. It’s something inside and it’s called a paradigm.” – Bob Proctor

Most of what happens to us in life is an outcome of our behaviour and habits. When you constantly skip the gym when you know you should go, this becomes the new norm for us and forms a bad habit (known as a paradigm).

So many of us continue to behave the same but expect a different outcome, often blaming external factors. The little voice inside our heads is always making excuses for us.  One way to kick our bad habits and replace our negative paradigms with positive ones is to write our new positive behaviour down, every day, in the present tense.

“I got up early today and went to the gym before work. I got up early today and went to the gym before work. I got up early today and went to the gym before work. I got up early today and went to the gym before work….”

Although it may seem silly at first, repeating this positive statement will retrain your brain and build new positive paradigms that get you towards your goals fast!

I used to be like you until I made the conscious decision (and lots of hard work) to turn my life around! Now I can truly say I am living my best life and have dedicated myself to helping people, just like you, to live their best life too!
